Over the first decades of the nineteenth century, a new print portrait format achieved international popularity. This format combined a vignette of the sitter’s likeness with a facsimile reproduction of their signature – a self-assertion of individuality, as well as an indexical trace of agency. In his lecture, Tom Young will connect the popularity of this format to the development and global expansion of lithographic printing. By surveying the production of ‘autographed’ print portraits in a range of imperial and colonial contexts, it will track how the format communicated political ideas that were used as the basis for domination as well as tools for resistance.
The lecture offers a sneak peek of Tom Young’s forthcoming publication Lithography and the Modern World, c.1796–1914.

Nineteenth-century works on paper were frequently created for private, intimate viewing within artist studios, personal sketchbooks, or restricted-access collector circles rather than public gallery walls. With this tradition in mind, SALON invites students and PhD candidates for a private viewing of a selection of lithographs and other works on paper at BRON's Print Room. Together with Tom Young and Evelien de Wilde, curator of the Bruges Print Room collection, the selected works on paper will be closely examined to make attendees familiar with the material, its characteristics and particularities.
Please note: you have to register for the Salon d’Automne, but there will be no extra charge for this part of the programme.
